Rwanda currently has its highest number of patients in critical condition since the New Coronavirus outbreak in March, with more than 40 people currently being given oxygen in treatment centres, in what seems to be a more worrying situation.

Since November last year, more COVID-19 patients are ending up on assisted breathing and critical care than before.

On 4th January 2021, cabinet resolutions introduced tougher measures to contain the spread of COVID-19, including prohibiting public and private transport to and from the City of Kigali as well as between different districts.

The Cabinet resolutions indicated that given the recent rise in COVID-19 cases, with half the total deaths occurring in December, there was a need to tighten existing health measures in order to contain the spread of the virus, urging the public to significantly reduce social interaction and limit movements unless it is for essential services.

“Urubuga rw’Itangazamakuru” (Club de la Presse)  talk show of this Sunday 10-01-2021 broadcast in synergy by ten radio stations across the country and a Television (TV Isango star) focused on “How is the increase in the number covid-19 cases, deaths related to preventive measures?"

  1. CP John Bosco KABERA/RNP Spokesperson
  2. Dr. Theophile DUSHIME/MINIS
  3. Jean Baptiste MICOMYIZA/Analyst

The Police Spokesperson said that there is a situation where people fear fines more than they fear the virus itself, which has contributed to the spread, citing recent cases where they arrested people hosting secret parties in their homes or turned restaurants into bars.

He said in such cases, fines of up to Rwf250, 000 are imposed but still more people continue to go against government directives to curb the spread on COVID-19, calling for a mindset change where people see the New Coronavirus as a real danger to their lives.

Jean Baptiste MICOMYIZA / Analyst: he said that for the first time the epidemic was well known and preventing measures well implemented, but also with time people hesitate to make compromises on this subject depending on the nature of people in general or country. And give the example of the Ministry of Health giving instructions in the night hours when people have already slept.

Often times when a person wakes up and finds that the instructions are there, it is not clear from the schedule they already have. Now, some people in the community have already said that the corona virus is a political system and not providing the information correctly. The public has already waived the instructions due to the backlash from the authorities.

Dr. Theophile Dushime from MINISANTE said that  currently over 90 percent of the known active cases are under home-based care but there are cases where rules have been violated by some individuals, putting others at risk in doing so.

He added that they monitor patients under home-based care and it has been working well since it was started in September but recently, they have recorded cases where people under home-based care violate the rules, either by taking a stroll in the neighborhoods or going to buy something at the grocery adding that there is another category of people who learn that they have the virus and keep it to themselves and go on with their lives.

Dr. Theophile also revealed that there are many people who have the virus but they are unknown because they have not been tested and these pose the real danger in transmitting it to other unsuspecting people.

He informed the public that covid-19 testing has been decentralized to district hospitals to be able to assess the condition of the population, and they are putting more effort into using rapid testing method.

The audience participated in the talk show and most of reactions were that home-based care is dangerous because people can easily transmit the virus to family members and neighbors.

They also asked government to decentralize covid -19 testing at Health Center level and do it for free because most of citizens cannot afford the testing cost.
