The talk show “Urubuga rw'Itangazamakuru” (Club de la Presse) of this 1st March, 2020 in synergy by ten radios and 1 Television (TV Isango star) focused on “the Management of rainwater and wastewater in Kigali City"

Since the beginning of November 2019, Rwanda has increasingly experienced heavy rains, affecting most parts of the country. As a result, many rivers across the country received huge levels of rainwater and overflew along their courses, causing flooding.

It is also noted that there are a few households and public houses that dump domestic waste water into the gutters when it rains because of the lack of pits in their homes. This generates bad smells everywhere in the street, in the neighborhood, or even in the sanitary field. The situation presents a risk for the spread of diseases such as diarrhea, cholera and malaria.

Key question in the talk show were:

- How is the management of rainwater and wastewater?

- Is there an approach to purify and make it reusable?

- What is the mechanism for finding a specific solution for managing rainwater and wastewater?

Les invitees :

  1. Olivier KANANGIRE /WASSAC
  2. Eng Emmanuel ASABAKATABARWA

The invitee from WASAC Mr. Olivier Kanangire explained that WASAC’s task is capturing and processing rainwater and wastewater.

He said that, the wastewater is transported by trucks to designated areas, but now they are going to build factories that will clean it in Kigali, one in Masaka and the other in Giticyinyoni. However he argued g the public to dig pits that are well-designed for the water from which vehicles will take waste water to designated places

Regarding the continued rainfall and problems in Kigali City, Mr. Olivier said that studies are underway to increase the number water gullies of carrying this water so that it can reach its intended destination.

He gave the hope to the citizens of the Kigali City that very early there is a project that has just been initiated to solve all these problems caused by the flood, this project aims to build adaptive pipelines, build a large stock to resemble all those rainwater or domestic wastewater to achieve the best protection of the population and the easy transformation of wastewater into drinking water.

Citizens participated in the talk show via phone calls and sms; their suggestion was in to ask the authorities to renew the rainwater pipes because it is already remarkable that a lot of rainwater damage comes from the rise or simply the overflow of gutter water which are not able to carry all water.
