On June 12th, 2016, the Sunday radio talk show “Club de la Presse" Urubuga rw'Itangazamakuru was focused on“the Problematic of investing in the media sector in Rwanda”.

The main questions were: is it possible to invest in media sector? Why Rwandan media is not growing wealthily?

The talk show began with a presentation made by the Executive Secretary of Media High Council on the state of the media in Rwanda and the role of MHC in capacity building of the media. He confirmed that it is possible to invest in the media.

This was also confirmed by Jerome Rwasa who gave the example of a community radio. For him, when the content is interested and well organised, people can buy it.

This was not the opinion of Joseph, the Managing Director of website "umuryango.com», to invest in the media in Rwanda. For him, that investment is a great risk, because the State which is the largest customer selects media with whom they work. He said: “The government favors public media and private media suffer”. According to the managing Director of Umuryango.com, as the state select the media to work with, the development of private sector that invest in media should be a solution to that issue, because the market could be wide, not only the public institutions are customers of media and yet private sector is not developed at the point of investing in that domain of media, therefore, private media are still suffering.

Another point raised by Joseph and which caused a discussion is the" basket fund "for the media. The journalist recalled that President Paul Kagame promised it for a long time, but he never emerged. For that journalist, that bask fund can help to advance the press in Rwanda. The Executive Secretary of MHC responded by saying that, they are in the process of implementing it.

On the reactions of listeners, the SMS received during the show said that Rwandans cannot pay for media that broadcast sport program only, for them there is no content in which they may invest. Others pointed out that journalists are afraid to speak for fear of being persecuted by some authorities.

A total of 8 sms have been received during the talk show.
